About: Sarajo Berman
I stand on the shoulders of many people that came before me and on the shoulder's of those I have had the pleasure to study and explore with and be inspired by. I spent 43 years as a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher of dance, movement and some 25 years as a student, practitioner and teacher of body therapies. It was my interest in the relationship of movement to sensation and the culmination of all my past experiences that fueled my own discoveries and development of an experiential somatic practice "Mindful Biodynamics" and "Moving Contemplations." These contemplative inquiries brought me to a personal shift in understanding bodies and a fuller awareness of our "fluid" bodies". We are made of more water than anything else. As we shift our perceptions from the denser part of our bodies to the fluid portion of our bodies, we move toward a broader sense (understanding) of embodiment and wholeness and the greater Wholeness that supports all living things. It is through the experience of stillness, which is dynamic, and movement that we become more alive and are able to enjoy a healthier way of being. We are Movement. Life is Movement.
My studies in body therapies have included: Pilates, Therapeutic Massage, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, Embryology, Neurobiology, Skinner’s Release Technique, Alexander Technique, Body Mind Centering, Ideokenesis, Effort/Shape, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Somatic Experiencing, Continuum and Life Coaching. My relationship to body therapies has evolved into a wholistic empathy based approach. It is the totality of a person, the whole of their story, that influences how they feel and behave. It is up to me to meet each client where they are and support their needs as they are revealed. Coming into relationship with my clients in a professional and confidential manner is of the upmost importance. This relationship assists with an ongoing therapeutic process and empowers self healing, the only true healing in my humble opinion.
Together, prior to each session, the client and I will choose which treatment or blend of treatments will best serve her or his needs. This approach greatly enhances the client's experience. Shifting to a “joint practice/co-creation” process brings trust and a sense of safety into our sessions. My clients and I have found that a joint practice supports improvement in health. Clients report feeling better, having a fuller sense of their bodies, less pain, less stress, and tend to sleep better. Mostly, they report developing a daily practice that supports their health by increasing body awareness and mindfulness. I continue to learn the complexities of individuals and how their bodies, minds, and spirit carry them through life. This learning assists in my continued growth and development as a therapist. I am continually humbled by these joint practice based relationships.
